Diffusion Pumps

Vacuum Products carries two lines of diffusion pumps.  DIP pumps have extremely high pumping speeds compared with their intake area and backstreaming can be almost completely suppressed by using a cold cap or Astrotorus baffle.  PD pumps come in smaller sizes for convenience in lab and small volume applications.

Vacuum Products Canada Inc. offers two product lines:

  1. The DIP range of diffusion pumps was developed for operation in industrial systems. Excellent vacuum performance combined with the inherent ruggedness of this kind of pump, make our DIP pumps a reliable component in high and medium vacuum applications.   With pumping speeds of 3000 to 50000 l/s these high volume pumps are an economical way to get to high vacuum fast.

  2. The PD range of diffusion pumps is available with built-in water baffle and integrated booster stage.  Cold and
baffle caps limit oil backstreaming and a full array of monitoring accessories ensures that you keep track of your oil temperature and cooling water flow.  Pumping speeds range from 150 to 40000 l/s.

Advantages to the User

High pumping speeds in the fine and high vacuum ranges
Low attainable ultimate pressure
Integrated, water-cooled cold cap baffle guarantees low oil backstreaming rates into the vacuum chamber
Low oil losses (even at high gas throughputs) by integrated, water-cooled forevacuum baffle
The heating cartridges are accessible from the outside via heating inserts which are built into the boiler. This ensures a quick exchange of single heating cartridges (even when the pump is hot)
A separate automatic circuit breaker for each heating cartridge ensures a high level of electrical safety
A standard built-in thermostat acts as an thermal overload switch and ensures that the heating cartridges can not overheat
All pumps are prepared for installation with an over-temperature switch (optional) for checking the cooling water circuit, and a contact thermometer (optional) to monitor the operating temperature of the diffusion pump
Indication of the oil level by sight-glass permits simple checking of the current oil level

Typical Applications - Diffusion pumps are used in coating systems, vacuum melting and drying systems, vacuum furnaces or in any area where reliable, low maintenance, low cost high vacuum is required.

Diffusion Pump Fluids - The level of vacuum attained is dependent upon the diffusion pump and pumping fluid chosen for your application.  Several grades of mineral, silicon and pentaphenylether fluids are available to suit your specific application.  Vacuum Products can supply a variety of fluids with the appropriate composition and vapour pressure to match your process and desired vacuum level.

Operating Principle of Fluid Entrainment Vacuum Pumps

The main components of diffusion pumps, the operation of which relies on vapour-phase pump fluids are:

Cooled pump body with intake and exhaust ports

System of nozzles

Pump boiler

In the case of diffusion pumps, a pump fluid contained in a boiler is heated to such an extent that it is vapourized.  The vapour is then forced through nozzles within the pump.  The nozzles are generally designed in such a way that they accelerate the vapour to a speed exceeding the speed of sound (Laval nozzles), thus creating a high speed vapour jet.  The vapour is then deflected by the nozzles at a specific angle onto the pump body.  The pump body is cooled so that the vapourized pump fluid condenses and is returned back to the boiler as a liquid.  The pumping action of diffusion pumps and fluid entrainment pumps in general is based on the transporting capacity of the vapour jet.  The gas which is to be pumped is compressed sufficiently at the forevacuum port so that it can be pumped out by a backing pump.
